Setting Up a Budget Alarm in AWS 💡

To help you manage and control your AWS costs, it's a good idea to set up a budget alarm. This way, you'll receive notifications if your AWS charges exceed a specified amount, such as $50 USD.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Budget Alarm

Follow these steps to set up a budget and receive alerts when your monthly costs exceed $50:

1. Login to the root account

  • If you are logged into your User account, log out, then log in to your root account.

2. Navigate to AWS Budgets

  • In the search bar at the top, type "Budgets" and select it from the dropdown.

Create Permission Set

3. Create a New Budget

  • Click on the Create budget button.

4. Choose Budget setup

  • Select Use a template (simplified).

5. Choose Templates

  • Select Monthly cost budget.

6. Add Details

Create Permission Set

  • Define Budget name
  • Enter your budgeted amount. i.e. $50
  • Enter email recipients
  • Click on "Create budget"

✨ Awesome! You will be notified when

  1. your actual spend reaches 85%
  2. your actual spend reaches 100%
  3. if your forecasted spend is expected to reach 100%.

Managing Your Budget

  • Monitor Spending: Regularly check your dashboard to monitor your spending against your budget.
  • Adjust as Needed: If you anticipate higher usage, you can adjust your budget amount or alert thresholds.
  • Explore Cost Insights: Use AWS Cost Explorer (opens in a new tab) for detailed cost analysis.

By setting up a budget alarm, you'll receive timely notifications if your AWS spending exceeds your budget i.e. $50, helping you manage your costs effectively and avoid unexpected charges.
